When did hacky sack start?

Hacky Sack is the classic game created in America by John Stallberger and Mike Marshall's game in 1972. Hacky Sack is very similar to the traditional Chinese game Jianzi (played with a feathered shuttlecock instead of a footbag). The game started out with small bean filled sacks that John and Mike began kicking around. As the game evolved, they refined their footbag designs, which eventually led to the diversity of footbag types and games we have today.
